Haverford is the quiet one on the Main Line. It has no shopping district like Ardmore and no downtown like Wayne, and that is exactly why people choose it: a college campus with a public arboretum, two of the most storied clubs in American golf and cricket, and residential lanes where lots run to an acre or more under old beeches and tulip poplars. Where Haverford Actually Is (Two Townships, Two Counties)
Haverford is a postal community, not a municipality. ZIP code 19041 straddles the Montgomery County and Delaware County line. Roughly, the area north of Lancaster Avenue around Montgomery Avenue sits in Lower Merion Township (Montgomery County). Haverford College, the streets along College Avenue and Old Railroad Avenue, and the neighborhoods running toward Havertown are in Haverford Township (Delaware County).
Your side of the line decides your school district, your property tax rate, your trash schedule, and which township office to call about a moving truck. Two homes a half mile apart with identical Haverford addresses can pay noticeably different taxes and send kids to different high schools. When someone calls us about moving to Haverford, “which township?” is our first question, and it should be one of yours.
Housing Types You Will See
Estate homes on large lots
The Haverford most people picture is the belt of stone and brick estate homes around Merion Golf Club, Merion Cricket Club, and the college: Grays Lane, Booth Lane, Panmure Road, College Lane, and the roads that wind off Montgomery Avenue. Most were built between 1900 and 1940 and sit far back behind stone walls, gates, and long gravel or paver driveways. Inside, expect three full floors, back staircases, and original millwork worth protecting.
For a mover, these houses come with a checklist. Can a full-size truck clear the tree canopy? Is there room to turn around? Are the gates wide enough? The Commute
Haverford station is on SEPTA’s Paoli/Thorndale Line, and the ride to Suburban Station in Center City usually runs 25 to 30 minutes. Station parking is limited, so many residents walk.
By car, Lancaster Avenue (Route 30) is the spine, with Montgomery Avenue running parallel to the north. City drivers take City Avenue to the Schuylkill Expressway. King of Prussia and the Blue Route are about 15 minutes west. The tradeoff for Haverford’s quiet is that rush hour on Lancaster and City Avenue is real.
Schools
The township line does the sorting. Lower Merion addresses attend Lower Merion School District, generally feeding Harriton High School. Delaware County addresses attend the Haverford Township School District, from Coopertown and Chatham Park elementary schools through Haverford Middle School to Haverford High School. Both are well regarded. Confirm the exact assignment for a specific address with the district rather than trusting the ZIP code.
Independent schools matter here too: The Haverford School is right on Lancaster Avenue, with Agnes Irwin, Baldwin, and Episcopal Academy a few miles away.
Cost of Living
Haverford is one of the pricier addresses on the Main Line. Estate homes around the clubs and the college regularly trade well into seven figures, while the colonials on the Haverford Township side and the condos near the station offer a lower entry point. Property taxes are the number to study: the two counties assess differently and the two school districts levy different millage, so ask your agent to pull the actual tax bill for any house you are considering.
Things to Do
- Haverford College Arboretum and Nature Trail: a 2.2-mile public loop around campus that neighbors treat as their own park.
- Merion Cricket Club and Merion Golf Club: private, but they define the landscape, and Merion’s East Course has hosted multiple U.S. Opens.
- Ardmore and Bryn Mawr next door: Suburban Square, the Bryn Mawr Film Institute, and dozens of restaurants within a ten-minute drive.
What Moving Day Looks Like in Haverford
Driveways, canopies, and gates
The estate lanes are the main challenge. Mature trees hang low over long driveways, gravel softens after rain, and some entrances have stone pillars narrower than a moving truck. When a full-size truck cannot reach the house, we stage a smaller truck or shuttle from the road, and we plan that in advance so nobody is surprised on move day.
Street parking and township rules
Lancaster Avenue is a state road with limited stopping, so a truck cannot simply park out front on Route 30. On residential streets, Lower Merion and Haverford Township each have their own procedures for temporary no-parking signs and truck parking, so check with the township a week or two ahead. The official Lower Merion Township and Haverford Township sites are the place to start.
Old houses need protection
Original hardwood floors, plaster walls, curved banisters, and narrow third-floor stairs are the norm here.
