Senior Moving Hub | Main Line, Chester County & Philadelphia

Senior Moving Hub

Senior moves across the Main Line, Chester County, and Greater Philadelphia. Community guides, downsizing support, and full-service move management with Rightsize Relocation.

A senior move is not a regular move. Decades of belongings need sorting. New floor plans need to be measured. Heirlooms need to be distributed to family. Furniture that fit a four-bedroom Colonial does not fit a two-bedroom apartment in a continuing-care community. The whole job takes more time, more care, and more coordination than a typical relocation.

LiteMovers has been doing senior moves on the Main Line since 2007. We partner with Rightsize Relocation in West Chester for full-service move management when families need extra hands. Our crews know the senior communities, the move-in coordinators, the elevator schedules, and how to handle everything from china cabinets to oxygen equipment.

How a Senior Move Works

Every senior move is different but the structure is similar. Here is what to expect from first call to final box unpacked.

1

In-home consultation

A LiteMovers estimator walks the home with you and any adult children involved. We measure inventory, identify oversized furniture, and discuss the new floor plan if you have one from the receiving community.

2

Downsizing and sorting

Decisions about what comes, what goes to family, what goes to charity, and what gets sold or donated. For families needing more support, our partner Rightsize Relocation handles this work professionally over multiple sessions.

3

Community coordination

We contact the receiving community’s move-in coordinator, confirm the move window, reserve the freight elevator, submit any required Certificate of Insurance, and clarify any community-specific rules.

4

Pack and move day

Crew arrives early. Floor protection goes down at both ends. Items get pad-wrapped and shrink-wrapped. We label every box. The truck heads to the community. Crew unloads, places furniture per the new floor plan, and reassembles beds and tables.

5

Settling in

For Rightsize-coordinated moves, the team unpacks, makes the bed, hangs art, and sets up the kitchen so the new apartment feels like home from day one. Leftover items at the original home get sorted for sale, donation, or disposal.

What Makes Senior Moves Different

  • Time, not speed. Senior moves are not race-the-clock jobs. The crew works at a pace that lets the customer breathe, ask questions, and stay involved without feeling rushed.

  • Family communication. Adult children are often the primary point of contact. We coordinate with whoever needs updates and route questions to the right family member.

  • Heirloom and antique handling. China cabinets, sterling silver, oil paintings, and inherited furniture all get the careful packing and handling they deserve. Our crew leads have moved these items for hundreds of families.

  • Community move-in coordination. We work directly with the receiving community’s move-in coordinator. They tell us their rules. We follow them. No surprises on move day.

  • Disposition of leftover items. Things that do not fit in the new place need somewhere to go. We coordinate junk removal, donation pickups, and estate sale support. Rightsize handles the full disposition process when families need it.

  • Patience with the emotional weight. Senior moves often involve grief, anxiety, and difficult decisions. Our crews understand that. They lead with kindness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is senior move management and do I need it?

Senior move management is a professional service that handles the full lifecycle of a downsizing move. That includes sorting belongings, planning the new floor plan, organizing donations and disposals, packing, the move itself, and settling in at the new home. Families use senior move management when the older adult cannot manage the process alone, when adult children live far away, or when the timeline is short. LiteMovers partners with Rightsize Relocation in West Chester for full move management. We handle the moving and they handle the rest. Talk with us about whether move management makes sense for your family.

How long should I plan for a senior move?

Plan for 6-12 weeks from first conversation to move day when possible. Senior moves take longer than typical relocations because of the downsizing work that happens before the actual move. Sorting decades of belongings, distributing heirlooms to family, coordinating with the receiving community, and arranging disposal of leftover items all take time. Some families compress this into 4 weeks when needed. Others stretch it to 6 months. The right pace depends on the older adult’s energy, the family’s schedule, and the community’s move-in window. Move day itself usually takes a single day for most senior moves.

What furniture typically does not fit in a senior community apartment?

Sectional sofas often do not fit through narrow apartment doorways or elevator entries. Large dining tables that seat eight or more rarely fit in compact dining areas. King-size beds need to be replaced with queens in many one-bedroom units. Oversized armoires, large entertainment centers, and tall china cabinets often have ceiling-height issues. Most communities provide a floor plan with measurements when residents move in. Use it to identify what fits before you pack. Pieces that do not fit can go to family members, into estate sales, or to consignment shops. Talk with your estimator about the new floor plan during the in-home consultation.

Can you handle moves between care levels within the same community?

Yes. Many continuing care retirement communities have residents transition from independent living to assisted living to memory care or skilled nursing over time. These in-community moves are usually shorter distances but still need careful coordination. We work with the community’s move-in team to schedule the right window, transport furniture, and set up the new room or apartment. Care-level transitions often happen on shorter notice than initial moves, sometimes within a week. Call us as soon as the transition is planned and we will work with the community on timing.

What happens to items the senior cannot bring or no longer needs?

Several options exist for items left behind. Family members often take heirlooms, art, and meaningful pieces. Charities including the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and local nonprofits accept furniture donations and provide pickup. Estate sale companies handle higher-value items including antiques, jewelry, and collectibles. Consignment shops take quality furniture and decor in good condition. We coordinate junk removal and donation pickups directly through our service. For full disposition support, our Rightsize partnership handles the entire process from sort to sale to disposal. Talk with your estimator about the right mix for your family’s situation.
