Storage Facility Moving Guides
Loading and unloading storage units across Philadelphia, the Main Line, and Chester County. Facility-specific tips for cart access, elevator usage, unit prep, and packing.
Storage moves are different from house moves. Tight elevators. Limited cart space. Climate-controlled vs. drive-up units. 4-by-5 lockers vs. 10-by-30 garage-sized rooms. Move-in policies vary by facility, and the wrong assumptions can turn a quick load into an all-day project.
We’ve moved customers in and out of dozens of storage facilities across Greater Philadelphia. Each guide below covers the facility’s specific layout, access rules, and what to expect on move day. Pick yours from the list.

Storage at the LiteMovers Wayne Warehouse
Sometimes a third-party storage facility isn’t the right fit. Our Wayne, Pennsylvania warehouse offers another option for short-term and long-term storage between moves.
- ✓
Vault containers. Your belongings stay loaded in sealed wooden vaults. No re-handling between move and storage. Reduces damage risk during transitions. - ✓
Climate-controlled options. Available for furniture, art, electronics, and items sensitive to temperature swings. - ✓
Direct redelivery. When your new home is ready, we redeliver from our warehouse with the same crew that handles your move. No third-party handoff. - ✓
Closing-gap storage. Common when sale closing happens before purchase closing. We hold your belongings until your new home is ready, then schedule the redelivery. - ✓
Long-distance staging. Useful for cross-country moves where your destination home isn’t ready. We hold the load in Wayne and schedule the haul once you’re settled.

Universal Storage Move Checklist
Whether your facility is on this list or not, every storage move benefits from the same prep. Work through these items before move day.
- ✓
Confirm gate code and unit access. Most facilities require a personal gate code or app credentials to enter. Test the access ahead of move day so you’re not stuck at the gate with a loaded truck. - ✓
Reserve carts. Indoor multi-floor facilities have a limited number of flat carts and dollies. Some require reservation. Check with the front desk a day or two before. - ✓
Confirm access hours. Most facilities have access hours of roughly 6 AM to 10 PM. A few are 24-hour with app access. Office hours for paperwork are typically shorter. Coordinate move day with both windows. - ✓
Pack for storage, not transport. Stored items sit for weeks or months. Use uniform-sized boxes that stack flat. Leave breathing room for air circulation. Avoid liquids and anything that can leak. - ✓
Use furniture pads, not plastic wrap. Plastic wrap traps moisture in stored furniture. Pads or moving blankets allow air flow. Wrap mattresses and upholstered items in breathable mattress and sofa covers. - ✓
Plan the unit layout. Frequently-needed items go in front. Rarely-used items go in back. Stand mattresses on edge against a wall. Disassemble bed frames and tables to save space. - ✓
Take a unit inventory photo. Snap pictures of the loaded unit when you’re done. Helps memory and any future insurance claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can LiteMovers load a self-storage unit for me?
Yes. We handle storage facility loads regularly across Greater Philadelphia. Our crew arrives at your home, packs and loads your belongings, drives to the storage facility, and unloads into your unit. We coordinate access codes, cart reservations, and elevator usage with the facility before move day. The crew lays out the unit so frequently-needed items are accessible and stored items are protected. Talk with your estimator about facility specifics when booking.
Should I use a self-storage unit or LiteMovers warehouse storage?
Self-storage works well for short-term holds where you need access to items between visits. You handle the loading, unloading, and any future moves out of the unit. LiteMovers warehouse storage works better for closing-gap holds, long-distance staging, or when you don’t want to handle items twice. We pick up at your home, store the load in vault containers at our Wayne facility, and redeliver when you’re ready. No re-handling, no second move, no third-party drivers. Talk with your estimator about which option fits your situation.
What size storage unit do I need for my household?
A general guide: a 5-by-10 unit holds the contents of a small studio or one bedroom of furniture. A 10-by-10 holds a one-bedroom apartment with major furniture. A 10-by-15 holds a two-bedroom home. A 10-by-20 holds a three-bedroom home with most furniture. A 10-by-30 holds a four or five-bedroom home. Disassembled furniture and stacked boxes use space more efficiently than loose loading. Most facilities can upgrade or downsize within 30 days if you guess wrong. Talk with the facility manager and your estimator before reserving a size.
Do I need climate-controlled storage?
Climate-controlled units protect sensitive items from temperature and humidity swings that drive-up units cannot. Use climate control for wood furniture, leather, electronics, photographs, art, musical instruments, important documents, and anything you’d be upset to find warped or mildewed. Drive-up storage is fine for tools, outdoor furniture, plastic bins, and items that already live outdoors. Pennsylvania summers and winters are extreme enough that long-term storage of valuable items usually warrants climate control. Cost difference is typically modest compared to the protection.
Can I have my storage unit emptied directly to a new home?
Yes. We unload storage units and deliver to a new home address regularly. Send us the storage facility name, unit number, gate code, and the new home address. We coordinate access with the facility, load the truck, and deliver to your new place on the same day in most cases. This is also useful when you’re moving into a new home and your stored items need to come back at the same time as a separate household move. Talk with your estimator about coordinating multiple stops on a single move day.
