How We Size a Small Main Line Move
We ask about contents, not bedrooms. Floor plans lie. A Bryn Mawr studio with a wall of books and a full kitchen can outweigh a sparsely furnished one-bedroom in Devon.
Three things drive the estimate more than square footage.
What the heaviest items are
Sleeper sofas, upright pianos, treadmills, safes and full bookcases change the crew size on their own. Tell us about those first.
How many stairs and how long the carry is
A third-floor walk-up on Montgomery Avenue is a different job from a ground-floor unit with a loading door twenty feet away. Same contents, very different day.
Whether there is an elevator, and how fast it is
A reserved elevator speeds a move dramatically. A shared elevator during business hours can cost an hour or more. We ask, because it matters.
What a Typical Studio Move Looks Like
A two-person crew arrives with the truck, floor runners and a full load of pads. The foreman walks the unit with you before anything moves.
You point out what is fragile, what is going to storage, and what is not coming at all. That walkthrough takes ten minutes and prevents most of what goes wrong on small moves.
Furniture gets pad wrapped in place. Bed frames and table legs come apart. Everything is loaded, driven, and set down where you want it, not stacked inside the front door.
Packing a Small Apartment
You have three choices, and all of them are reasonable.
- ✓Pack it yourself and we load and move it. The most common option for studios.
- ✓Fragile-only packing, where we handle kitchen glassware, artwork, mirrors and electronics.
- ✓Full packing, where we pack everything, typically the day before the move.
- ✓Same-day pack and move, which works well for true studios with modest kitchens.
Book a fragile-only pack if you are unsure. Kitchens and artwork cause almost all of the damage on small moves, and they are the slowest things to pack well.
Wardrobe boxes are worth it. Hanging clothes go straight from the closet rod into the box and back onto the rod at the other end. On a one-bedroom that saves close to an hour.
Storage Between a Lease End and a Move-In
Main Line lease dates rarely line up cleanly. A lease ending on the thirty-first and a settlement on the fifth is a normal gap.

How long does a studio apartment move take on the Main Line?
A true studio moving a short distance within the Main Line is usually a half-day job. Loading a studio typically runs one to two hours with a two-person crew, with drive time and unloading on top of that. Stairs, a slow elevator, or a long carry from the truck to the door will extend it.
Is a two-person crew enough for a one-bedroom?
For most one-bedroom apartments, yes. A two-person crew and a smaller truck is the efficient answer when the unit is on a lower floor or has elevator access. We move up to a three-person crew when there are multiple flights of stairs, a long carry, or heavy pieces like a full-size sleeper sofa or a treadmill.
What counts as a one-bedroom versus a two-bedroom load?
We size the crew by contents, not by the floor plan. A one-bedroom with a home office, a dining set, a second sofa and a home gym is a two-bedroom load in practice. Being honest about what you actually own lets dispatch send the right crew and truck the first time, which is faster for everyone.
Do I need to empty my dresser drawers?
Leave lightweight folded clothing in dresser drawers. We pad wrap the dresser and move it as one piece, which saves you boxes and time. Empty anything heavy, breakable, or liquid, and remove jewelry, documents and medication so those travel with you rather than on the truck.
Can you pack a studio the same day you move it?
Yes, and it is a common request for smaller units. A two-person crew can pack a typical studio in the morning and load it the same afternoon. For a one-bedroom with a full kitchen and a lot of fragile items, we usually recommend packing the day before so the move day stays on schedule.
