Fairless Hills, PA Movers

A Steel Town Built From Scratch

Fairless Hills began in the fall of 1951 on farmland in Falls Township. The Danherst Corporation put up prefabricated homes made by Gunnison, a company owned by U.S. Steel. The steel giant also financed the building. The town took its name from Benjamin Fairless, who was president of U.S. Steel at the time.

The homes were built for workers at the new Fairless Works steel plant, which opened in 1952. By the 1970s the mill employed more than 5,000 people. Most of the plant closed in 2001. The site is now part of the Keystone Industrial Port Complex.

Moving Out of a Compact Fairless Hills Home

Factory-built houses in the 1950s were made to be efficient. Rooms tend to be modest and storage space is limited. After 70 years, many owners have updated kitchens, finished basements or added rooms. Others still have the original layout.

Either way, we look at the home before we plan the job. A finished basement may hold as much as the main floor. A tight hallway may mean a dresser travels without its drawers. We pad corners and doorways first, then move room by room.

Our Room-by-Room Approach

  • ✓Kitchens get dish packs and cell boxes for glassware.
  • ✓Bedrooms get wardrobe boxes so clothes stay on hangers.
  • ✓Basements get sorted into keep, donate and haul-away piles first.
  • ✓Sheds and garages get emptied last, once the house is clear.
  • ✓Every box gets labeled with the room it goes to at the new home.

If you want help with the whole job, our packing services cover everything from the kitchen to the basement. If you would rather pack yourself, we can bring the heavy lifting only.

Short Moves Across the River to Trenton

Trenton, New Jersey, lies just across the Delaware River from Falls Township. U.S. Route 1 runs as a freeway across the north side of the township and on into downtown Trenton. U.S. Route 13 ends at Route 1 inside the township. Those roads make a move to Trenton or Mercer County a short drive.

Short or not, a move into New Jersey crosses a state line. That makes it an interstate move under federal rules. LiteMovers holds USDOT 2173383 and MC-888055 for this kind of work. See our New Jersey movers page and our guide to moving from Philadelphia to New Jersey.

Downsizing After Decades in One House

Many Fairless Hills homes have been in the same family for a long time. Some owners are the children or grandchildren of the first steelworker buyers. When it is time to sell, there is often a lot to sort.

LiteMovers offers senior moving and downsizing help for these moves. We can clear unwanted items with our junk removal and donation service. If some pieces need a home for a while, we store them in sealed wooden vaults near King of Prussia. Each vault has a signed inventory and 24-hour video watch.

Local History Worth Knowing

Falls Township is far older than its steel-era suburbs. Fallsington was the main village until Fairless Hills and Levittown were built. Pennsbury Manor, William Penn’s country home, sits along the river in the township. The Sotcher Farmhouse in Fairless Hills joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
