Where Wynnewood Is (and Which Township You Are In)
Wynnewood is a postal community, ZIP code 19096, not a borough with its own government. Nearly all of it sits in Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County, between Ardmore, Narberth, Penn Valley, and the Philadelphia city line at City Avenue. A small slice of the ZIP spills south into Haverford Township in Delaware County.
The township line matters more than the ZIP. It sets your school district, tax bill, trash pickup, and who you call if a moving truck needs to hold a lane. Two houses that both say “Wynnewood, PA” can be in different counties, so confirm the township before you get attached.
Housing Types You Will See
Older twins in Penn Wynne and Wynnewood Park
The classic Wynnewood house is a brick or stone twin from the 1920s through the 1940s: three bedrooms, a front terrace, a shared driveway or rear alley, and a basement that has seen a few decades of weather. Penn Wynne, south of Lancaster Avenue toward Haverford Road, is full of them, and they are why first-time buyers and young families can get a Lower Merion address without an estate budget.
From the moving side, twins have a personality. Staircases are narrow and turn at a landing, front doors are small, a neighbor’s car can block the shared driveway, and the street usually has parking on both sides with one lane left open. We plan twin moves around exactly those things.
Single-family homes off Wynnewood Road and Penn Road
North of Lancaster Avenue, the lots get larger and the houses become stone colonials, Tudors, and center-hall homes, plus a few older estate properties near Bryn Mawr Avenue. Apartments and condos along Lancaster Avenue
Wynnewood has more mid-rise and high-rise apartment living than most Main Line communities, clustered along Lancaster Avenue, near Wynnewood station, and toward City Avenue. They attract Lankenau staff, retirees who sold a nearby house, and renters who want a short train ride to work. Most require a reserved elevator, a certificate of insurance from your mover, and a move-in window, so get the policy in writing before you book.
Commute and Getting Around
Wynnewood’s commute is its best argument. Wynnewood station on SEPTA’s Paoli/Thorndale Line reaches 30th Street or Suburban Station in roughly 20 to 25 minutes. Drivers take City Avenue to the Schuylkill Expressway or Lancaster Avenue in through Overbrook, typically 15 to 25 minutes to Center City outside of rush hour.
Three things shape moving day here:
- Lankenau traffic. Lankenau Medical Center sits at the Wynnewood end of Lancaster Avenue, and shift changes put steady traffic on Lancaster Avenue, Wynnewood Road, and nearby side streets.
- City Avenue. The Route 1 corridor is busy all day, so expect delays near the expressway ramp if either end of your move is on the Philadelphia side.
- Narrow residential streets. Streets in Penn Wynne and around Wynnewood Park were laid out for one car per house, not two, and a 26-foot truck cannot always fit without holding a lane.
Schools
Most of Wynnewood is served by the Lower Merion School District. Elementary assignments depend on your street, with Penn Wynne and Penn Valley Elementary covering much of the area, and students generally move on to Lower Merion High School in nearby Ardmore. Lower Merion is consistently ranked among the strongest districts in Pennsylvania and is why many families accept a smaller house here over a larger one farther out. The Haverford Township slice attends the School District of Haverford Township, and Friends’ Central School, a Quaker independent school, is located right in Wynnewood.
Cost of Living
Wynnewood is one of the more accessible entry points on the Main Line. Twins in Penn Wynne and Wynnewood Park generally price below single-family homes in Ardmore, Haverford, or Bryn Mawr, and the apartment inventory gives renters and downsizers options that Villanova or Gladwyne do not have. Larger homes north of Lancaster Avenue are priced in line with the rest of Lower Merion. Because the Haverford Township portion is taxed differently, compare actual tax bills when you look at two homes. Errands are easy: the Wynnewood Shopping Center and Whole Foods sit on Lancaster Avenue, and Suburban Square is a short drive or walk.
Things to Do
Wynnewood is more residential than Ardmore or Narberth, but it has its own pockets. Shortridge Memorial Park is a hidden rock garden with a stream and walking paths, Penn Wynne Park and Wynnewood Valley Park cover playgrounds and fields, and the Kaiserman JCC on Haverford Road offers a pool and programs. For dining, most residents head to Ardmore or City Avenue.
What Moving Day Looks Like in Wynnewood
Moving to Wynnewood comes down to three things: narrow streets, tight twins, and elevator buildings.
Street parking and truck placement
Lower Merion Township does not run a parking authority the way Philadelphia does, so there is no formal temporary no-parking sign process. On most residential streets a truck can park where it is safe and legal, but on narrow twin blocks it will hold a lane. We keep the truck tight to the curb, ask clients to clear the shared driveway the night before, and coordinate with the township if traffic will be affected.
Twins, stairs, and large furniture
Sectionals, king box springs, and tall dressers regularly do not make the turn on a twin’s staircase. We measure on the walkthrough, plan disassembly, and protect banisters, door jambs, plaster corners, and original hardwood before the first piece moves.
Apartment buildings

- Check your mover’s credentials. Local household-goods movers in Pennsylvania must be certified by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, and interstate movers need an active USDOT number with the FMCSA.
