Packing Tips
Supplies you will need:
Boxes
Tape
Labels
or markers
Scissors or box cutter
Bubble Wrap
or tissue paper for fragile items
The Basics
- Pack items that are currently in storage and not being used.
- Place similar items in the same box.
- Keep heavier items toward the bottom, and build up from there with lighter things on top.
- Layer tissue paper between items to fill space. Thoroughly cushion fragile pieces.
- Label Boxes
with a code for each room and secure them with Tape
. That way, movers can quickly identify where your things - should go without wasting time.
How to Package Specific Items
Books
Pack books flat on top of each other, heavier ones on the bottom. Be careful not to pack too many books in one box to avoid crushing the binding.
Lamps
Take out the light bulb, remove the lamp shade, and Tape
the cord to the base. Protect lamp parts with Bubble Wrap
or tissue paper before placing in a box.
Desks and Dressers
Pack light, delicate items in drawers and cushion with clothing or sheets. Do not put heavy items in drawers. Tape
the outside of the drawers to secure items.
Kitchenware
Pots and pans can be stacked but dishes should be wrapped to avoid breakage due to vibration. Avoid stacking dishes flat on top of each other. Use larger Boxes
to store kitchenware, and do not make the Boxes
too heavy.
Framed Items
Things in frames Such as mirrors or artwork Should be cushioned with tissue paper and placed facedown in a box. For larger items, use a Frame Box and clearly label as “Fragile.”
Outdoor Equipment
Tools for gardening and yard work should be kept together and secured. Drain gas from lawn mower, remove blade, and store safely in a box with a label. Hoses should be drained before packing.
Pets
If you can not get someone to watch your pet, it’s best if cats and small dogs are crated in a pet carrier. Otherwise, keep a leash on your pet at all times throughout the move. Contact your veterinarian with your questions prior to the move.
