What Not to Pack: Moving Mistakes That Cost You Time and Money
Common errors that delay moves, damage belongings, and add unnecessary stress
![]()
Even experienced movers make packing mistakes. Boxes that are too heavy. Chemicals that cannot go on the truck. Valuables mixed in with household items. These errors slow everything down and sometimes cause real damage. Knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing what to do.
LiteMovers has been moving families across Chester County, Delaware County, and Philadelphia since 2007. Here are the most common packing mistakes we see — and exactly how to avoid them.
LiteMovers follows all PA PUC (A-8916211) and FMCSA/USDOT (2173383) regulations. When in doubt about an item, call (610) 755-5535 before moving day.
Items You Cannot Put on the Moving Truck
These are not optional guidelines — they are legal and safety requirements. No licensed mover can transport these items.
Hazardous Materials
- ✗ Paint — latex and oil-based
- ✗ Propane and gas tanks (even empty ones)
- ✗ Gasoline, kerosene, and lighter fluid
- ✗ Cleaning solvents, turpentine, and paint thinner
- ✗ Pool chemicals, bleach, and ammonia
- ✗ Pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers
- ✗ Aerosol cans of any kind
- ✗ Car batteries and standalone lithium batteries
Chester County hosts periodic hazardous household waste collection events. Visit chesco.org for dates. Montgomery County: montcopa.org.
Perishable Items
- ✗ Refrigerator and freezer contents for long moves
- ✗ Open food containers
- ✗ Live plants for interstate moves
- ✗ Fresh produce and open pantry bags
Donate non-perishables to Philabundance or a local Chester County food pantry before your move.
Six Common Packing Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Mistake 1: Boxes That Are Too Heavy
A large box full of books can exceed 80 pounds — a safety hazard and a damage risk when dropped.
The fix: Pack heavy items only in small boxes. If you cannot lift it comfortably, your mover should not have to either.
Mistake 2: Poor Labeling
Boxes labeled “misc” become mystery boxes on unloading day. They end up in wrong rooms and slow unpacking by hours.
The fix: Label every box with the room name and a brief contents list on the top and two sides. Use one color of tape per room for instant sorting on unloading day.
Mistake 3: Not Enough Packing Material
Empty space in a box lets items shift during transit and break against each other. This is the leading cause of dish and glassware damage.
The fix: Fill every gap with crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap. Shake the closed box — if you hear movement, add more padding. A properly packed box feels solid.
Mistake 4: Mixing Rooms in One Box
Filling extra space with items from another room seems efficient — until you spend 20 minutes hunting for your kitchen timer in a bedroom box.
The fix: Always keep rooms together. Fill extra box space with packing paper, not items from another room.
Mistake 5: Starting to Pack Too Late
A three-bedroom home takes 20 to 40 hours to pack properly. Most people underestimate this by 50 percent.
The fix: Start 4 to 6 weeks before moving day. Follow our 8-week moving timeline for a room-by-room packing schedule. Or let LiteMovers pack for you with our professional packing services.
Mistake 6: Surprises on Moving Day
Telling your mover about the piano, gun safe, or large aquarium on the morning of the move causes delays, adds time, and sometimes results in items being left behind.
The fix: Be thorough during your estimate. Walk through your home and point out every specialty item. This lets LiteMovers bring the right crew, equipment, and truck configuration from the start.
What to Keep With You on Move Day

All medications, first aid kit, glasses, hearing aids, medical devices
Jewelry, family heirlooms, cash, laptop, hard drives with irreplaceable data
Phone chargers, toiletries, change of clothes, snacks, toilet paper, coffee maker

Packing Mistake FAQs
What items can movers not transport?
Professional movers cannot transport hazardous materials including paint, aerosols, propane tanks, gasoline, pesticides, pool chemicals, and cleaning solvents. Movers also cannot take perishable food and live plants for interstate moves. LiteMovers follows all PA PUC and FMCSA regulations. Call (610) 755-5535 if you have questions about a specific item.
Can I leave clothes in dresser drawers when moving?
It depends on the dresser. If it is lightweight and drawers close securely, many crews will move it with clothes inside. For heavy or antique dressers, remove drawers and pack clothes separately. Ask your LiteMovers crew on move day — they will assess your specific dresser.
What happens if I overpack a box?
If the flaps do not close flat, the box is too full. Overpacked boxes collapse when stacked and damage items inside and in boxes below. Movers are not required to carry boxes that are unsafe due to overpacking.
Should I move valuables myself or let the movers handle them?
For irreplaceable items — jewelry, heirlooms, important documents, and medications — carry them yourself in your car. Do not put these on the truck. LiteMovers is fully insured, but no insurance fully replaces a truly irreplaceable item.
What is the biggest packing mistake people make when moving?
Waiting too long to start. A three-bedroom home takes 20 to 40 hours to pack properly. Start 4 to 6 weeks before moving day. LiteMovers offers packing services if you want professional help from day one.
