When to Move: Cheapest Month, Day, and Time of Day
When peak season hits, which days are busiest, and how far ahead you really need to book.
The cost of a move is mostly about scope, not timing. But timing does affect availability, scheduling flexibility, and sometimes the smoothness of the move. Here is what really matters about when you move.
Peak season vs off-season
Peak: mid-May through mid-September
The busiest time for movers. School schedules drive most family moves. Leases turn over heavily on June 1, July 1, August 1, and September 1. Crews are stretched. Dates fill up weeks or months in advance.
Off-season: October through April
Slower months. More crew availability. Easier to schedule the exact date you want. Late fall and winter are often the easiest times to book.
Days of the week
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: slowest
Mid-week moves are the easiest to book. Most people prefer weekends, so weekday demand is lower. If your job is flexible, mid-week is the right answer for booking.
Saturday and Sunday: busiest
Most people want weekend moves because they do not need to take time off work. Weekends fill up fastest. If you want a weekend, book early.
Friday and Monday: variable
Friday gets busier as people start long weekends. Monday is moderate.
Days of the month
First and last 3-4 days: busiest
Most rental leases start and end on the 1st of the month, so the few days around the 1st are heavily booked. The same applies to the 30th and 31st when people are moving out.
Mid-month (roughly the 10th-20th): slowest
The middle of the month is usually the easiest stretch to book.
Time of day
8-9 AM start: standard for full home moves
Crew is fresh. Traffic is manageable. Buffer time if the job runs over. This is the default for most local moves and almost all interstate moves.
Afternoon start: works for smaller jobs
If you have a small load that will fit in 3-4 hours, an afternoon start can work. Risks: crew is finishing an earlier job and may run late; afternoon delivery hits rush hour; daylight gets short in winter.
Evening or overnight: rare
For some apartment buildings with strict freight elevator windows or commercial office relocations, evening or weekend moves are common. For residential, daytime is the standard.
Weather considerations in the Philadelphia region
Most Philadelphia-area weather is fine for moving. The exceptions:
- Heavy snow or ice: Rare but happens. We pad and protect, lay down floor protection, and adjust the truck approach. Severe storms occasionally cause day-of reschedules.
- Sustained extreme heat (mid-90s+): Slows the crew. We hydrate and pace; longer jobs may need an additional crew member.
- Heavy rain: We use stretch wrap and pads. Floor protection at both ends is essential.
- Hurricane warnings: Anything with a named storm in the area gets rescheduled.
How far in advance to book
Peak season (June-August): Book 6-8 weeks ahead
Shoulder season (April, May, September): Book 4-6 weeks ahead
Off-season (October-March): Book 2-4 weeks ahead, often less
Interstate moves any season: Book 4-6 weeks ahead minimum
Last-minute moves: what is actually possible
If you have less notice than the windows above, we can often still help. Same-week and next-week moves happen routinely in the off-season. Same-day moves are harder but sometimes available, especially mid-week. The honest answer is always a phone call — we will tell you what is realistic for your dates.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest month to move?
January and February are typically the slowest months for movers, which can mean more crew availability and easier scheduling. The peak season runs roughly mid-May through mid-September; that is when the industry is busiest. Moving in the off-season (October through April) usually means more flexibility and easier date selection.
What is the cheapest day of the week to move?
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are typically the slowest days. Weekends and the first and last days of the month are the busiest. Moving mid-week and mid-month tends to give you better crew availability and easier scheduling. The exact day matters less for cost than the calendar month for most local moves.
Is it cheaper to move in winter?
Often, yes. Winter moves face less demand, so crews and trucks are more available. Real winter weather (snow, ice) adds some operational complexity, but most Philadelphia-area winter days are perfectly fine for moving. December has a slight uptick around the holidays; January and February are usually the slowest.
What time of day is best to start a move?
Morning starts are best for most moves. Crews are fresh, traffic is lighter for the drive between locations, and the day has buffer time if anything runs over. Afternoon starts can work for smaller jobs but risk running into rush hour or daylight constraints. 8-9 AM is the typical start for a full home move.
Does moving on a holiday cost more?
Most movers do not work on major federal holidays. On the days before and after holidays, demand is sometimes lower (people are traveling or have plans), which can mean more availability. We do not work Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day; surrounding days are usually open.
