Address Change Help: Complete Checklist for PA Moves
The complete address-change checklist for Pennsylvania moves, sorted by tier so you handle the urgent stuff first.
Moving is not just a physical event. It is also dozens of address changes spread across mail, government, finance, insurance, utilities, subscriptions, and accounts. Miss a few and you spend the next year chasing forwarded bills and wondering why no one is sending your renewal notices. Here is the checklist that gets it all done.
The four tiers of address changes
Not every account needs immediate attention. Group them by urgency.
Tier 1: Do these first (3-4 weeks before)
- USPS Change of Address — moversguide.usps.com — sets up 12 months of mail forwarding
- Bank and credit card billing address — statements, fraud alerts, replacement cards
- Employer HR — payroll, tax documents, benefits
- Insurance providers — auto, home, health, life
Tier 2: Government (within 1-2 weeks of moving)
- PennDOT — driver’s license and vehicle registration (15 days for license in PA)
- Voter registration — pa.gov
- IRS — Form 8822 for individual or 8822-B for business
- Social Security — if receiving benefits
- VA — if a veteran with benefits
- Selective Service — men 18-25
Tier 3: Utilities and services (set up before move day)
- Electric: PECO or your local provider
- Gas: PECO Gas or PGW (Philadelphia city)
- Water and sewer: Aqua, Philadelphia Water Department, or municipal authority
- Trash and recycling: township-managed
- Internet and cable: Xfinity, Verizon Fios, Astound
- Home security: transfer or cancel
Tier 4: Subscriptions and accounts (within a month)
- Streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Spotify, etc.)
- Amazon, Walmart, Target, and other retailers
- Food delivery (DoorDash, Uber Eats, Instacart)
- Magazines and newspaper subscriptions
- Professional memberships
- Gym memberships
- School records and pediatrician (if children)
- Veterinarian (if pets)
- Loyalty programs and rewards cards
PennDOT specifics for Pennsylvania moves
Pennsylvania law requires drivers to update their address with PennDOT within 15 days of moving. You can update online at dmv.pa.gov. Update both:
- Your driver’s license address
- Each vehicle’s registration address
If your move changes your county, your insurance rates may change too. Notify your auto insurance carrier the same day you notify PennDOT.
Internet timing: do not wait until move day
Internet companies often need 1-2 weeks to schedule installation at a new address. Some buildings have wired infrastructure that limits which providers you can use. Call your provider as soon as you sign your lease or close on your new home. Schedule installation for the day after move-in if you cannot get the actual move day.
Things you can cancel instead of transferring
A move is a good time to clean house on subscriptions and services you no longer use.
- Streaming services you have not opened in 3 months
- Gym memberships you have not visited
- Magazine subscriptions you do not read
- Storage units at your old address (if you are moving everything)
- Auto-renewing services for products you no longer need
Half an hour of subscription auditing typically saves $50-$150 per month. Worth doing.
For families with kids and pets
- School district: transfer records, register at new school
- Pediatrician: transfer records to new doctor
- Dentist and orthodontist: transfer records
- Pet veterinarian: transfer records, get a copy of vaccination history
- Pet licenses: update with new township
- Microchip registration: update with the chip company
A two-hour plan to knock it all out
Set aside two hours. Make a list of every account you log into and every recurring bill you receive. Update each one online in turn. For accounts without online updates, schedule a phone call for the next day. Most people who do this in one sitting finish 80% of the list in under 90 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone help me change my address when I move?
Yes. While the moving company itself does not change your address with USPS or your bank, we share a complete change-of-address checklist with every customer so nothing falls through the cracks. The actual changes — USPS, PennDOT, voter registration, banks, utilities — you handle yourself, but with a clear list it takes far less time.
Does USPS forward all my mail automatically?
USPS will forward most first-class mail for 12 months after you file a Change of Address. Some categories (magazines, certain bulk mail) do not forward or stop forwarding earlier. Filing the USPS COA is step one, but you still need to update your address directly with banks, employers, doctors, and subscriptions.
How early should I start changing my address?
Two to three weeks before the move is the sweet spot. File USPS Change of Address 1-2 weeks before. Update PennDOT, voter registration, and key financial accounts in the same window. Utilities should be set up at the new address before move-in day so you arrive to working power, water, and internet.
Who absolutely has to know about my move?
USPS, PennDOT (driver’s license and vehicle registration), the IRS (Form 8822), Social Security if you receive benefits, all financial institutions (banks, credit cards, brokerages), insurance providers (home, auto, health, life), your employer, your doctor and pharmacy, the IRS, and the school district if you have school-age children.
What about all my subscriptions and online accounts?
These are easy to forget. Streaming services, Amazon, food delivery apps, online retailers, magazines, professional memberships. Most of them are 2-minute updates on the company’s website. Set aside an hour and run through them all at once. Our full checklist covers the major categories.
